I ♡ NY
I ♡ NY
This drawing was created during a 2 week seminar called "I <3 Manhattan." The line drawing [originally formatted as 36"x36"] is apart of a larger "coloring book" exhibit of Manhattan, which will be held at end of August, 2017.
The drawing is a fantastical scene of Manhattan that depicts the decay of the "romanticized" skyline with the existing iconic buildings, which are being overtaken by the new "iconic" residential skyscrapers. These new slender profiles will have a lasting impact not only on the aesthetic of the city but also the cultural identity. In the foreground of the drawing, two adaptations of architecturally iconic sections of new projects in the city have been reimagined with new programs/ scenes. Various iconic images, symbols, objects, and people of New York City have been placed within the scene for viewers to find.
This drawing is apart of a larger commentary about the current state of city development, which has become aligned with gentrification that is dictated by wealthy and powerful developers who are disconnected form the cultural identity of local communities within the different districts and boroughs of New York City. The drawing is the product of various research about NYC; in my case, I looked at Woody Allen's romantic depiction of the city in his film Manhattan (1979), and Michael Sorkin's commentary about Jane Jacobs and New York City planning/development in his book All Over the Map (2011). In addition, I created a time-lapse montage of our visit to New York City where we looked at various iconic locations from movie scenes.
